Salt Flats Route & Monks of the Pacana: Landscapes from Another Planet

Description

Salt Flats Route & Monks of the Pacana: Landscapes from Another Planet Prepare for a high-altitude expedition to the most surreal and less explored landscapes of San Pedro de Atacama. This route takes us towards the border, through volcanic sceneries that look like something out of a sci-fi movie. 🌋 Ascent via Jama Pass and Panoramic Views We depart from your hotel towards the Jama Pass (border with Argentina). The road ascends through slopes of lava and volcanic ash, offering mandatory stops: Oasis Viewpoint: A spectacular panoramic view of the entire Atacama Salt Flat and the San Pedro oasis. Licancabur Volcano: At km 41 (4,200 m.a.s.l / 13,780 ft), at the turnoff to Hito Cajón, we will appreciate the majesty of the Licancabur Volcano (5,916 m / 19,400 ft) dominating the northern horizon. 🦅 Altiplanic Wildlife and Rock Formations We continue our journey among great mountains, where it is common to spot groups of rheas (ñandúes) running across the steppe and small lagoons inhabited by Andean birds (km 75). Monks of the Pacana (Tara Moais): Passing the Pacana hills (km 91) and skirting the imposing Tara Cliff, we will reach a vast esplanade. Here stand the "Witnesses of the Pacana" or Tara Moais: gigantic vertical rock columns sculpted by the wind, testaments to violent volcanic eruptions from the Tertiary period. Tara Cathedrals: We will enjoy a panoramic view of the so-called "Cathedrals," rock formations that resemble natural castles. 🦩 The Spectacle of Tara Salt Flat Our final destination is the Tara Salt Flat, located at 4,500 meters (14,760 ft) of altitude. This place offers an extraordinary ecosystem and a wonderful landscape, where the silence of the altiplano is only interrupted by the presence of numerous birds, highlighting colonies of Chilean flamingos. An essential 4x4 adventure for geology and photography lovers! 🛎️ Logistics Information Maximum Altitude: 4,500 m.a.s.l. (14,760 ft). Recommendation: Bring warm clothing (layers), sunscreen, and plenty of water. Walk slowly due to the high altitude.

Expert Advice

Pre-Trip Recommendations Physical Preparation and Diet: To ensure an optimal experience and prevent discomfort caused by altitude or mountain travel, we recommend avoiding alcohol and red meat the night before the excursion. Opt for a light dinner high in easily digestible carbohydrates. What to Bring Warm Clothing in Layers (Wind protection): Weather conditions along the route can change drastically. It is essential to dress in layers (thermal base layer, fleece/sweater) and you must bring a windbreaker or outer shell jacket, as wind gusts in the area can be intense and rapidly drop the wind chill factor. Closed-toe, Comfortable Footwear: Trekking shoes or sneakers with good traction for safe walking on uneven terrain. Cold Weather Accessories: Beanie and thermal gloves, essential to protect yourself from low temperatures and constant wind. Sun Protection: Sunglasses with UV protection and high-factor sunscreen, as the wind can mask the true intensity of solar radiation. Constant Hydration: At least 1.5 liters of still water per person to stay properly hydrated throughout the trip.
