Chiloé Island, Ancud and Puñihuil Penguin Colonies

Description

Embark on a fascinating cultural and wildlife journey to the northern shores of Chiloé Island. This full-day excursion takes you deep into the mystique of an archipelago unique in South America, seamlessly blending the rich colonial history and local myths of Ancud with an unparalleled wildlife navigation experience in Puñihuil—a natural sanctuary world-renowned for its marine biodiversity. Expedition Highlights: Chacao Channel Crossing: We begin traveling south along the Pan-American Highway to Pargua, where we board a ferry to cross the channel. Keep an eye out for marine birds and sea lions during the scenic sail. Historic Chacao Village: Visit this picturesque settlement founded in 1567. We will stroll through its Main Square, admiring its brightly colored wooden buildings and its historic colonial church. Caulín Bird Sanctuary: Drive along this beautiful bay, a true paradise for birdwatchers where you can spot black-necked swans, flamingos, and cormorants. Here, you will have the optional opportunity to taste fresh oysters at a traditional seaside restaurant. Legendary & Historic Ancud: Explore the city's most significant landmarks, including the Main Square, the Artisan Market, the Huaihuen Hill viewpoint, and the imposing Fort San Antonio—a Spanish military outpost built in the late 18th century. Puñihuil Penguin Boat Tour: We head to the open ocean coastline at Puñihuil beach. Here, you will board a guided boat to cruise around the islets and get a close view of both Magellanic and Humboldt penguins. This is globally celebrated as the only place on Earth where these two species live and nest side by side.
