Full-Day Tour: Humberstone Saltpeter Works, La Tirana Sanctuary & Pica Oasis

Description

Travel into the heart of the deep Atacama pampa on an expedition that blends the fascinating history of the "white gold" boom, the religious mysticism of northern Chile, and a refreshing retreat in a desert oasis. We invite you to an unforgettable cultural journey through the remnants of the saltpeter era and the deepest traditions of the Tarapacá Region. Expedition Highlights: Humberstone & Santa Laura Saltpeter Works: Explore these awe-inspiring ghost towns, declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. Walk through perfectly preserved ruins, including the theater, the company store (pulpería), the hotel, the hospital, and the industrial plant where the saltpeter that revolutionized global agriculture was processed. Geoglyphs & Tamarugal Reserve: We will cross the Coastal Range and Pampa Perdiz, admiring the ancient geoglyphs of Cerro Isla and driving through the native forests of the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve. La Tirana Sanctuary: Visit the picturesque village and temple that hosts Chile's largest and most important religious folklore festival every year—a place filled with unique cultural syncretism and deep devotion. Pica Oasis & Cocha Resbaladero: Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you will have free time to unwind in the famous "Cocha Resbaladero" semi-thermal pool, nestled inside a natural rock cave. Treat yourself to Pica's renowned tropical fruit juices (mango, guava, passion fruit) and traditional local pastries. We will also visit the San Andrés Church and the Jurassic Park featuring life-sized dinosaur replicas. Matilla Oasis: On our way back, we stop at this historical oasis to discover an 18th-century Spanish wine press (lagar), a historic stone bell tower, and the San Antonio Church, which houses a moving, life-sized display of the Last Supper.
