Located 192 kilometers from Arica and 51 kilometers from the town of Putre, Lake Chungará is one of the most dazzling jewels of the Lauca National Park. This majestic body of water encompasses a surface area of 21.5 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 33 meters. Fed primarily by the Chungará and Sopocalane rivers, the lake stands as a vital oasis amidst the arid altiplano landscape, perfectly accessible via International Route 11-CH.
The visual spectacle it offers is simply breathtaking. Its freezing, turquoise waters act as a perfect natural mirror, reflecting the imposing silhouettes of the surrounding volcanoes. Despite the very low temperatures that strongly discourage swimming, its shores are teeming with life, making it a true paradise for watching endemic wildlife. Majestic birds such as the Chilean flamingo, giant coot, Andean goose (guallata), ñandú (suri), and Andean condor coexist here alongside picturesque mammals like vicuñas, alpacas, vizcachas, and the elusive puma.
For tourists, exploring Lake Chungará is an experience that intertwines ecological wonder with deep Andean cultural heritage. Just 13 kilometers from its shores lies the historic village of Parinacota, famous for its beautiful, ancient colonial adobe church. Visiting this lake means delving into the immensity of northern Chile, a world-class destination where pristine nature and the legacy of altiplano communities remain intact.
